These days, Indianapolis isn’t known for its train rides and railways, which is interesting considering it’s home to the first union station in the entire world and has roots in the railroad industry dating back to the 1800s. While you won’t find a multitude of commuter trains throughout the city, there are still a few very interesting in-state historic rides that you and your family can enjoy. Let’s take a look at the French Lick Scenic Railway, located less than 100 miles south of the city.
In French Lick, Indiana, you’ll find this iconic train tour that takes you across the French Lick Scenic Railway.
This train tour is part of the historic Indiana Railway Museum. Founded in 1961 in Westport and relocated to French Lick in 1978, this museum includes over 65 pieces of rolling stock and locomotives.
The Railway offers 20-mile round trip day tours that take you through parts of the Hoosier National Forest.
You’ll see multiple limestone outcroppings along with picturesque sites throughout Southern Indiana.
Throughout the year the railroad plays host to special events including a "Day Out with Thomas [the Tank Engine]" and "The Wizard of Oz Train Ride."
There is even a holiday themed "The Polar Express Train Ride" which is a must-see event for people of all ages. While riding the Polar Express train, you'll be entertained with song and dance as you and your family are taken to the North Pole to see Santa.
Check the French Lick Scenic Railway’s website for their online schedule and up-to-date departures.
You'll find the station at 1 Monon Dr., French Lick, IN 47432
Don’t hesitate to book one of these can’t-miss train rides for you and your family. You certainly won’t forget this trip. There’s really nothing quite like it in our beautiful state!
