There are lots of really delightful small towns in Indiana, and there are a lot of delightful not-so-small towns, too. Thing is: if you don't have a car - or you simply prefer not to drive everywhere - it's a little harder to get around. But not in this town! Hammond is ranked as one of the most walkable towns in Indiana and we think you'll find it charming and fun. There are plenty of things to do, see, and experience here, and for most of it you won't even need a vehicle. Come check out Hammond, the walkable town you may have never been to:
Hammond, Indiana, is located in Lake County, and technically, it's a suburb of Chicago!
It is the one and only Indiana city to border Chicago, and it was originally settled in the 1850s.
It's one of the oldest cities in Lake County, and despite its age, it's a vibrant, happening little place with gems all over.
Hammond has historical significance, too: it was Lake County's first industrialized city, though today, most of the top attractions are nature-based and more peaceful than industrial.
Check out the breathtaking Gibson Woods Nature Preserve and stroll along some of the beautiful hiking trails on the grounds - including easy boardwalks accessible for most.
You can wander around on your own, or you can do an interpretive tour and learn a thing or two (or ten).
There's also the Challenger Learning Center, a STEM-based field trip experience that's beyond a blast for the kids.
The Challenger Learning Center hosts public events, too, so be sure to check out the official website for the most up-to-date events and programs.
Wolf Lake is another relaxing attraction in Hammond.
Enjoy the marina by foot or, even better, rent a boat and head out onto the water. There's nothing like watching the sunset from Wolf Lake.
There are also art galleries, boutique eateries, and local shops you can't miss.
So, plan a whole day trip in the town of Hammond - and don't worry about bringing the car along!
So, there you have it: one of the cutest, most walkable towns in Indiana! Hammond is a treat for locals and tourists alike, and if you ever find yourself in the area, you ought to visit. Heck, even if you're in the Chicago area - check Hammond out!
