You know, there are some towns in the Hoosier State that seem to come up time and time again when someone asks, "What's the best small town in Indiana?" The truth is, "best" is definitely subjective, and everyone's going to have their own thoughts on the matter. However, we here at Only In Your State are pretty sure there's a reason some of these towns pop up again and again - and it's because they're just that great. Enter the adorable, charming little town of Angola; this little place has been called - by more than one outlet - one of the best small towns in Indiana, and honestly, it's pretty easy to see why.
Angola, Indiana was founded in June 1838.
Ever since then, it's celebrated a vibrant life. Angola has been called things long the lines of "best small town" in the state, as well as "most interesting historic town" and plenty more. The accolades are well-earned, as the town is, indeed, adorable in every way; as a bonus, it's as historically intriguing as it is adorable.
It's a special little spot; the goal in downtown Angola is to promote a sense of community, and they do so with fun events and educational programs where everyone is welcome.
Attend the Angola Art Fest in late summer, and during the fall, take part in the pumpkin carving contests or see who wins the annual costume contest. Could it be you?
Christmas and the holidays are also a super-special time in Angola. Step into the North Pole during the winter months leading up to December 25th; the town is well-known across the entire Midwest for its truly magical holiday celebrations.
For those who appreciate nature, Angola is a paradise.
It's home to beautiful Pokagon State Park, where the views will make you appreciate Indiana's beauty in an entirely new way. It was originally called Lake James State Park, and we can see why.
Lake James is a reason to visit Angola all on its own.
There's something particularly special about watching the sun rise and set over the lake; the sparkling water seems to reflect the color of the sky, creating a picture-perfect few moments you'll never forget. Whether you're camping or lodging, you're bound to find the beauty of the area intriguing.
Angola also has a nice selection of highly rated and much-loved restaurants.
We encourage visitors to eat local! You'll have numerous mom-and-pop shops to choose from, and if you're staying over a weekend (or maybe longer), you ought to try them all!
So, what do you think? Planning a visit to Angola any time soon? If so, you should know that it's also possibly haunted. What are your picks for the best small towns in Indiana? Tell us all about your choices in the comments.
