As temperatures start to heat up, you're likely looking forward to weather that's warm enough that you can lounge outside by the water. There's a little-known beach town in Illinois that is the perfect place to enjoy the sun and nearby Lake Michigan.
Keep scrolling to learn all about the village of Beach Park.
Located in Lake County, this village sits near our southeast border with Wisconsin. Beach Park became an official town in 1989 and is currently home to between 13,000 and 15,000 residents.
The town's name is derived from an old train station along a line that connected Chicago and Milwaukee. The conductor would call out "Beach Park" for "Beach Station" in the 1920s, and the name stuck. By 1949, the village was a full-fledged community though was not incorporated until the '80s.
This awkwardly shaped town between Wisconsin and the north suburbs of Chicago (i.e. Waukegan), lies right up against Lake Michigan and the South Beach section of Illinois Beach State Park.

Residents of Beach Park aim to preserve the simple way of life. Boating, fishing, and golfing are the most popular activities here.
Other attractions include parks and nature preserves, but there are also a wealth of attractions in the area like historical museums, festival spots, and amusement parks.
The best time to visit is during Beach Park's annual festival that takes place in August. It includes a car show, craft booths, a petting zoo, a kiddie train, bounce houses, and food vendors.
