If you've been on the hunt for a perfectly unique adventure, look no further than the trek to the tri-state marker that marks where Idaho, Wyoming, and Utah come together. Located in a remote area near the town of Montpelier, visiting this marker will take some effort. However, it will be SO worth it when you find yourself standing in three states at once! Who knows, after visiting this marker you may just make it your goal to visit them all. There are dozens of tri-state markers located around the country and this one in Idaho is a great place to start.
It turns out there are 65 spots across the country where at least three states converge together at one point. Idaho alone is home to five of them, with the one in the southeastern corner of the state being the easiest one to access.
Called "tri-points" or "tri-state markers", these humble monuments signify where where certain states meet. This means that you can officially stand in multiple states at once when you visit one. Yes, it's a simple thrill, but it's a thrill nonetheless!
Located way out in the boonies of Idaho's southeastern corner, the closest town in Idaho to the tri-state marker is Montpelier. However, you'll actually pass over into the town of Cokeville, Wyoming when seeking this marker out.
In Cokeville, you'll follow the sign in town that points west to the tri-state monument. The sign will lead you to an old dirt road where you'll drive approximately two miles until you see another sign that points up towards a hill.
From here, you can get out and hike around 600 yards to the monument. The hike is short but the hillside is steep, so do come prepared with good hiking boots. The 3-foot-high marker is located at an elevation of 7,100 feet, surrounded by nothing but sagebrush and grass.
The marker itself has three sides, each labeled with the corresponding state that it faces. It's simple but it makes for a great spot to grab a picture so you can brag to your adventure buddies. Additionally, a small plaque gives visitors a brief history of when the Idaho-Utah-Wyoming boundary was established.
Seeing this tri-state monument makes for a fun adventure in the middle-of-nowhere-Idaho. If you do embark on this unique experience, be sure to go with a reliable vehicle and GPS. It may take some effort to find, but it's worth it!
