Exploring all of the various mountain roads that Idaho has to offer is one of the most splendid parts of living in the Gem State. There's nothing better than a long and quiet drive through some of Idaho's most beautiful landscapes. However, there's a reason the "high road" is considered to be difficult. Mountain roads often require you to traverse through steep, rugged areas and winding switchbacks. But the views are totally worth it! If you're up for an incredible drive that boasts the most epic mountain views, then you need to check out one of Idaho's highest roads: Highway 21.
Idaho State Highway 21, also known as the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway, is an incredible drive that leads you through some of the state's most majestic landscapes. This 130-mile drive begins in Boise and ends in Stanley, all while passing through several high-elevation areas.
The route begins southeast of Boise and primarily follows the Boise River. As you head upstream, the highway takes you right by the iconic Lucky Peak Dam.
It isn't long before the highway is completely surrounded by beautiful Ponderosa pine forest. The highway enters a very historic area of the Boise National Forest. You'll be led through the historic mining town of Idaho City, which is a popular day trip for families. It's not until you leave Idaho City that the elevation begins to really amp up!
The highway climbs along Mores Creek, leading you to Mores Creek Summit which sits at 6,117 feet. Highway 21 begins to descend here before passing through the tiny town of Lowman, Idaho.
As you continue north of Lowman, the highway begins to climb again taking you higher and higher until you reach Banner Creek Summit at 7,056 feet. This is the highest point of the entire route! It's here that you enter the Challis National Forest, where the pine trees go on for as long as the eye can see.
You'll feel on top of the world as you continue driving through some of Idaho's most spellbinding scenery!
The route ends at an elevation of 6,250 feet in the breathtaking town of Stanley. Stanley is one of Idaho's best-kept secrets, boasting some of the most gorgeous surroundings with the epic Sawtooth Mountains as a backdrop!
Highway 21 is one of Idaho's highest roads so be sure to plan your scenic drive accordingly. Some of the road's higher elevation areas are closed off due to weather. This incredible mountain drive may take a little extra effort, but the breathtaking panoramic views make it totally worth it in the end.
