Located in central Idaho is a dirt road that's considered the highest road accessible to full-size vehicles in all of Idaho. Don't get us wrong. The journey along Railroad Ridge is tough. However, the views at the top make it so completely worth it.
The road is located in Custer County within the White Cloud Mountain Range. The peak elevation of the road is 10,433 so hopefully you don't have a fear of heights! However, if you enjoy a good challenge then this the road for you.
The road to the summit is intense and only vehicles with high clearance four-wheel-drive are recommended. Definitely don't attempt this road in severe weather conditions since avalanches, heavy snowfall, and landslides are known to occur at any time.
Railroad Ridge is a very narrow road with very few pullouts. You'll definitely want to take it nice and slow to ensure you don't drive over any sharp rocks or large dips. As you traverse the road, you'll climb approximately 7,200 feet until you reach the ridge's peak.
Besides the extreme nature of Railroad Ridge, driving along Idaho's highest road is an indescribable experience that is bound to blow you away. After all, the views that are hardest to get to are often the ones that are most worth seeking out.
Prepare to be in total awe once you reach the top. At an elevation of over 10,000 feet, you'll have the most breathtaking views of the Sawtooths to the west and the unending Frank Church Wilderness to the north. Both the Lost River Range and Lemhi Mountains can be seen along the eastern side of state. It truly feels like you're standing on top of the world.
