There is nothing quite like a family road trip. However, finding destinations that every member of the family will enjoy can be quite a challenge. This is not a long road trip. In fact, you may even be able to complete it on a single tank of gas. You will have 61 miles to travel and at least 1.5-hours of drive time. However, you may want to break this trip up into several days to give your family plenty of time to enjoy each and every attraction. Our road trip begins at the most unique art studio in Idaho — Splatter Lab. Here, you can create masterpieces by splattering all colors and types of paint onto a canvas. You’ll be given all of the gear you need (including a speaker so you can splatter to an awesome playlist!) and be prepared to get a little messy!
As you continue your drive in southeastern Idaho, make sure to stop by Yellowstone Bear World, a drive-thru wildlife park. The entire family will love watching all of the bears meander across the road, climb the trees, and play. Keep your eyes out for elk, bison, mountain goats, and even a moose as you drive around. Your kids will love the small amusement rides and you can sign up to feed the baby bears — they are adorable! The entire family will enjoy their time at the East Idaho Aquarium in Idaho Falls. Not only is this aquarium home to all types of ocean animals such as jellyfish, eels, and tropical fish, but there is even a shark exhibit and stingray touch area. Don't be afraid to step inside the bird enclosure, and make sure you visit Wookie the Sloth to watch as he climbs, eats, and plays.
With all of the excitement, you'll definitely get hungry. Head to Leo's Place, a train-themed restaurant that not only serves a variety of pizza, sandwiches, and hamburgers, but is also home to one of the largest arcades in southeastern Idaho.
The Museum of Idaho is the number one history and science center in Idaho. It is also one stop on this family-friendly road trip in Idaho where you can spend a significant amount of time. The exhibits regularly rotate and there is a Discovery Room where children can crawl through caves, climb, play, and more. Located in downtown Idaho Falls is ARTitorium, an interactive art adventure. This family attraction is packed with all types of unique activities that allow you to unleash your creativity like a green screen studio, noise-making installations, and stop-motion animation stations. This family attraction is geared towards children 12 years old and younger.
Make sure you don’t miss one of the most unique and unusual museums in Idaho: the Potato Museum. Here, you will not only learn a little about the history and growing processes of potatoes, but you'll also see some oddities like the world's largest Pringles crisp. This is a unique and perfect ending to this road trip.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Go for a memorable adventure through breathtaking eastern Idaho when you set off on the Sacajawea Historic Byway. Beginning at the intersection of I-15 and Idaho 33, this scenic drive shows off a vastly underappreciated region of our state.
Of course, this scenic drive has plenty of breathtaking vistas to enjoy, but that's not all this highway is known for. The best part about the Sacajawea Historic Byway is the incredible stories you're bound to discover about this region along the way.
This part of eastern Idaho is packed with history, including Sacajawea and the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery to the mining boom of the 1800s. Passing through this area is like experiencing a piece of living and breathing Idaho history.
From the intersection of I-15 and Idaho 33, the byway traverses a dozen or so miles before turning north on Highway 28. It then stretches all the way to Salmon, Idaho — a delightful small town that calls itself the birthplace of Sacajawea.
The route is as remote as it gets and you'll likely experience long stretches without another soul on the road. However, the surrounding beauty of the majestic Lemhi Valley is unlike anything you've experienced before.
On the way, you'll have the opportunity to stop by old charcoal kilns that were used to process lead and silver ore over a century ago. The kilns are an excellent reminder of the history that resides in this amazing region.
The former mining town of Gilmore can also be found along this route. It's practically a ghost town with nothing but dilapidated structures left of the community that it once was.
Traveling along the Sacajawea Historic Byway is so much more than a scenic road trip. It's a trip through Idaho's past and it's an adventure that's bound to leave an impression. It's an Idaho scenic drive that you need to experience at least once.
