With 31 scenic byways in Idaho, there are plenty of opportunities to see the Gem State’s beauty. While each of these byways offers something just a little different, the Peaks to Craters Scenic Byway in Idaho is quite unique. In fact, this is the most diverse scenic byway in Idaho. You’ll explore large mountains and lava flows and everything in between. You’ll not only enjoy one of the most beautiful drives in Idaho, but this will be an unforgettable day trip in the Gem State.
The Peaks to Craters Scenic Byway is 140 miles through central Idaho. You’ll want to plan at least three hours of drive time and many more if you stop to explore the attractions along the way.
This byway begins at the junction of Highway 93 and 75, near the small town of Challis. This is a great place to fuel up your vehicle, grab some snacks, and prepare for the day.
You may even take some time to explore the Land of the Yankee Fork State Park.
This state park is home to ghost towns, abandoned buildings and mining equipment, and many outdoor recreation activities. It is also a lesser-known state park so you can enjoy a little history and scenery without the crowds.
As you continue south on Highway 93, the mountain views will impress you. You’ll see Mount Borah, Idaho’s tallest mountain peak at 12,662 feet above sea level.
While you won’t have the time to climb this peak and continue your drive, make sure to add the Mount Borah Trail to your bucket list. However, you will have to prepare both mentally and physically for this climb as it is quite a challenge.
Once you reach Arco, stop and stretch your legs. Then, to continue your drive, turn onto Highway 26 where you’ll notice the landscape around you begins to change.
Not much farther on the highway, you will come to Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. This is essentially large fields of lava flow and it is one attraction where you can spend a considerable amount of time.
Stop in the visitor’s center, tour a cave, or go on a hike during your stop. If you want to stay in your car, consider taking a short drive on Loop Road. Shortly past Craters of the Moon, you'll come to an area with breathtaking beauty. If you have the time, make sure to stop at the Silver Creek Preserve.
This natural area is not only where you can enjoy some quiet and disconnect, but you can also throw in a line and observe some wildlife. It's the perfect place to end your day trip.
