Most of Hawaii's towns are unique in some way, but here's a town that offers: a thriving art community, a distillery, a historic church, a pineapple farm, a rich Paniolo history, and more.
Makawao is located in Maui's upcountry, and it's a place you're going to want to visit.
The town has around 7,000 residents and plenty to see and do.
Stroll through the streets to find galleries, shops and restaurants.
Makawao is well-known for its vibrant art community. You'll find several fine art galleries and lots of locally-made crafts, too.
Check out the Makawao Union Church, located at 1445 Baldwin Avenue. It's a gorgeous stone church built in 1917.
The paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys) are also a vibrant part of this town. Try to make room in your schedule to visit during the Makawao Rodeo, held on July 4th.
Your trip to Makawao isn't complete until you've stopped at T Komoda Store & Bakery for a cream puff or donuts on a stick.
Take a tour of the Haliimaile Distilling Company. Their specialty? Vodka distilled from pineapple!
Right next door, you'll find the Maui Gold Pineapple Farm. Take the tour, taste the pineapple, and take some home with you.
For a moment of quiet reflection in a gorgeous sanctuary, visit the Sacred Garden of Maliko. You'll find it at 460 Kaluanui Road.
All throughout town, you'll find quirky little things that show you just how wonderful and wacky this town is.
