I've said it before and I'll say it again: middle Georgia often gets ignored by travelers, and it's a shame! Sure, our northern regions have amazing mountains, and you'll find tons of history and scenic beaches all along the coast. But the central portion of the state is just as worthy of a visit. You'll find some really neat spots here, from numerous small towns to the diverse urban center of Macon. But when you're looking for a summer day trip in Georgia, few areas are better than somewhere near a body of water. As we all know, summer means outdoor fun, but it also means brutal heat. Being near a cool breeze and a river or lake to jump in can mean the difference between a refreshing afternoon or a day spent miserably soaked in sweat. One of the best lake towns in Georgia is the small city of McRae-Helena, home to Little Ocmulgee Lake.
The city's name sounds like two separate cities because it once was. The towns of McRae and Helena were merged in 2015 to form a single city in Telfair County.
About 6,200 people live in McRae-Helena.
The main draw to McRae-Helena is the stunning Little Ocmulgee State Park. This 1,360-acre park features hiking trails, a golf course, campsites, and a lodge.
One of the prettiest sights here is the beautiful Little Ocmulgee Lake, a 256-acre lake with a white sand beach.
Swimming, boating, and fishing are all permitted at the lake.
There are more things to do in McRae-Helena, GA than spend time at the lake though! If you're a fan of bargain hunting, you won't want to miss Needful Things Antique and Flea Market.

One of the more unique landmarks in McRae-Helena is a homemade Statue of Liberty replica.
The Georgia version of Lady Liberty is made at 1/12 scale from a nearby swamp stump, Styrofoam, and an electrician's glove.
McRae-Helena has a few tasty restaurants. If you're in the mood for classic American dining, check out Southern Star Grill.
The menu has a diverse array of salads, steaks, chicken, ribs, and more.
