You may wonder what to do if you can only spend one day in the quaint town of Plains, Georgia. We've researched and mapped out the must-see places in this small southwestern Georgia town.
Plains, Georgia, is about 120 miles south of Atlanta and has about 750 residents. Many farms in the area grow peanuts, cotton, corn, and soybeans. It's known as the hometown of Jimmy Carter, the 39th U.S. President and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Jimmy Carter National Historic Park is a must-see attraction in Plains. The family-friendly site includes Jimmy Carter's childhood home and farm and the Plains High School Visitor Center, where Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter attended school. The Plains Depot, where Carter's 1976 presidential campaign was headquartered, is also part of the historic park. The depot is the oldest building in Plains and now houses a self-guided museum where visitors can learn about Carter's life and work.
One of Plains's most popular trails is part of the historic site, the Jimmy Carter Childhood Farm Trail. This 0.5-mile loop trail is generally considered easy. The path takes visitors around the restored farm, passing animals and historical markers.
Main Street in Plains has several places to shop and dine and is a great place to visit. Visitors can stay overnight, shop, or do both at the Plains Historic Inn and Antique Mall. The antique store has dishware, soaps, home decor, gifts, and more. Honey Hush Boutique and Gifts is another place to shop on Main Street, selling bags, apparel, seasonal items, and more. The Buffalo Cafe at the Old Bank is an American restaurant on Main Street serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a casual, welcoming space. Their sandwiches, burgers, soups, and salads perfectly accompany a day of shopping and sightseeing in Plains.
Another must-see destination is about a 45-minute drive from Plains. Providence Canyon State Park is a 2,706-acre park with a stunning canyon created by erosion caused by poor 19th-century farming techniques. Now, visitors can enjoy the canyon's pink, orange, and red colors. There are picnic shelters, campsites, a playground, and a museum.
