While Georgia has an incredibly rich history within our country—one of the original thirteen colonies, the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr., the fourth largest state east of the Mississippi River—there may be one story in our history that you aren’t quite familiar with. A mythical creature once roamed the town of Darien, and the story behind this creature might just scare the heck out of you.
The beautiful and stunning Altamaha River stretches along 137 miles in the center of Georgia.
Not only is it known for being the third largest fresh water source pouring into the Atlantic, but it also is home to the famed river beast known as the Altamaha-ha.
The Altamaha-ha water monster is a creature known to swim the shores near Darien, Georgia, taunting local fisherman for years.
A mix between a crocodile, a sturgeon, and a seal is what the Altamaha-ha monster has been known to look like, stretching over 30-feet in size.
While it always remained more of a local Indian lore, it wasn’t until 1981 that a newspaper publisher saw the monster for himself and needed the world to know.
What was noted as having two humps, at least five feet apart, moving faster than a river speedboat—that painted the picture of the Altamaha-ha.
Once that story hit the public, more stories started coming to light about sightings also noted of the river beast.
A tale of a similar creature was reported by a local fisherman, nearly twenty feet long with the head of snake.
Or the other tale of a seventy-foot-long creature near the mouth of the Altamaha River, with an alligator-like head, came nearly eight-feet out of the water before disappearing underneath.
While some claim the tale of the Altamaha-ha to be that of folklore, you may want to head to Darien, Georgia to see for yourself.
Thanks to YouTuber Taylor James Johnson, we are a glimpse into what the locals think about the Altamaha-ha river beast.
