1. Apalachicola
This friendly fishing town in the Panhandle produces some of the best seafood in the state (and 90 percent of our oysters), and nearby St. George Island is a true gem. It's also one of the best small towns near Tallahassee.
2. Cedar Key
Cedar Key is a beloved old-fashioned city about an hour southwest of Gainesville. This historic place with charming shops and stilt houses is a wonderful stop to explore Old Florida.
3. Fernandina Beach
Those of us in North Florida already know and love Fernandina Beach, located on Amelia Island. Of course, the beach is lovely, but the historic downtown area with upscale shopping and dining really seals its spot on this list.
4. Tarpon Springs
Visitors fall in love with the old-world charm of this Greek sponging town 45 minutes from Tampa. Historic buildings, antique stores, and a gorgeous waterfront make Tarpon Springs a perfect vacation spot.
5. Stuart
Stuart is the Sailfish Capital of the World, located north of Palm Beach on Florida's Treasure Coast. Stroll through the historic downtown, visit the great museums, and don't forget to take a yoga class - especially outdoors!
6. Mount Dora
One of our better-known small towns, Mount Dora in Central Florida offers a glimpse of Old Florida just an hour outside of Orlando. Bed and breakfasts, antique shops, and gorgeous historic homes are some of its greatest attractions.
7. DeFuniak Springs
This beautiful town is located about an hour from Pensacola and it's one of the most charming small towns near Tallahassee, Florida. We think it's full of charm as it features many beautiful Victorian homes and the state's oldest library is still in operation.
8. Dunedin
Dunedin in Pinellas County has a lot to offer packed into a small city. It has fascinating Scottish roots it still honors, and it hosts a popular Mardi Gras celebration. Plus, it's home to a historic Jazz Age hot spot, the Fenway Hotel, and Florida's oldest microbrewery, Dunedin Brewery. Not to mention, it has one of the best beaches in Florida at Caladesi Island State Park.
