When it comes to vacation destinations, Detroit might not be at the top of your list. After all, it’s easy to overlook the Motor City in favor of more famous destinations like New York, Los Angeles, or a tropical location. Those of us who know the truth of Detroit, though, can vouch for the city’s incredible attractions and fantastic perks. Need proof? Here are nine reasons why Detroit is America’s top vacation city.
1. The people are truly unique.
When you visit Detroit, you’ll meet some of the strongest and most resilient people imaginable. The city is teeming with creative innovators, self-made businesspeople, community-oriented residents, and hard workers. There’s a sense of Midwestern charm here that’s easy to love, and you’ll feel like part of one big, happy family as soon as you arrive.
2. The food is fantastic.
If you’re a foodie, Detroit offers so much to love. After all, our town is home to Detroit-style pizza, mouthwatering coney dogs, Vernors floats, and so much more. Dig into authentic fare as you visit Mexicantown, order a few gyros in the city’s Greek district, or try one of the countless hip, new eateries. The cuisine in Detroit is enough to keep you coming back for more.
3. The art scene is booming.
Are you an art enthusiast? Look no further than Detroit when you’re seeking an exciting outing. Stroll through centuries of classic and modern works at the Detroit Institute of Arts or explore commissioned graffiti along the Dequindre Cut. From public art to refined pieces on display, it’s hard not to be inspired as you check out the many colorful, creative pieces throughout the Motor City.
4. Did we mention the music?
You’d have to be a robot not to appreciate the grooving sounds of Motown, and Detroit is fiercely proud of its musical history. When you opt to vacation in Detroit, you’ll find nods to the city’s rhythmic roots around every bend. Be sure to check out the famous Motown Museum to get a real taste of Detroit’s music scene - from Stevie Wonder to Marvin Gaye, the list of legends who created iconic work in the city is endless.
5. You won’t break the bank.
In comparison to more popular vacation destinations throughout the United States, Detroit offers affordable lodging options and lower costs across the board. While your wallet might take a serious hit during trips to New York, Orlando, or San Francisco, the Motor City will impress you with its Midwestern thriftiness and abundance of low-cost (and free!) activity options.
6. There’s plenty of outdoor space to explore.
Think Detroit is all about urban sprawl? Think again. The city also offers convenient access to plenty of natural beauty, whether you’re strolling along the beautiful banks of the Detroit River or enjoying a picnic in Grand Circus Park. Embark on a riverfront boat tour, check out the greenery on Belle Isle, or head to one of the city’s nearby Metroparks for a day of bonafide hiking. What’s not to love?
7. The sports scene is loads of fun.
You don’t have to be a hometown fan to appreciate a fun sporting event, and Detroit offers more than its fair share. Sure, you might have a few criticisms of the Lions, but there’s something invigorating about enjoying an NFL game at Ford Field or watching the Red Wings play. From the Pistons to the Tigers, Detroit’s sports teams are beloved - and you’ll find this pride contagious.
8. History buffs will find much to love.
Detroit’s history is brimming with fascinating stories, many of which can be uncovered by checking out local museums and historical sites. Venture to the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant to learn about the origins of the automotive industry or immerse yourself in military history at Historic Fort Wayne. By the time you’re through with your trip, you’ll have a whole new appreciation for Detroit’s role in world events.
9. The spirit of the city is truly inspiring.
Sure, Detroit has experienced its fair share of hard times, but that hasn’t stopped the city from growing and changing in positive ways throughout the years. It’s hard to visit the Motor City without marveling at its many accomplishments, from refurbished buildings to bustling new restaurants to urban farms. If you visit Detroit, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve played a role in the city’s new era.
