From history-rich communities to locales surrounded by breathtaking nature, many of these tiny towns offer gems just waiting to be discovered. When you’re looking for a quick getaway, consider these small but mighty spots near the Motor City.

1. Lexington

Whether you’re keen on outdoor exploration, art, shopping, or a combination of these, you’ll undoubtedly find something to love in Lexington. This town houses a population of approximately 1,200 residents and can be reached from Detroit in just 90 minutes. From waterfront views at Lexington State Harbor to drinks at Old Town Hall Winery, the fun here is endless.

2. Richmond

If you’re searching for a dash of historical charm, you’ll surely find it as you drive past long-standing homes in Richmond. This small town, which is home to just under 6,000 residents, also features a delightful community theatre, access to the Macomb Orchard Trail, and a quaint downtown complete with boutiques and eateries.

3. Chelsea

Situated just an hour from the Motor City, Chelsea is an absolute must-visit for Detroiters of all ages who want to escape the busy life for a while. Let the kids blow off some steam at Timber Town, catch a show at the famous Purple Rose Theatre, or shop ‘til you drop downtown. No matter how you choose to spend your time here, you’ll want to return for a second visit.

4. Dexter

There are under 5,000 residents in Dexter, but this town just an hour from Detroit is loaded with things to enjoy. Take in the beauty of nature at Dexter-Huron Metropark or Mill Creek Park, grab something delicious from Dexter’s Pub, or check out the Dexter Cider Mill. There’s fun to be had here in every season.

5. Marine City

Clocking in at just 55 minutes by car from Detroit, Marine City offers a quick and easy escape from city life. This quaint community on the shores of the St. Clair River is full to the brim with natural and manmade delights. Take a stroll at nearby Algonac State Park, see if there’s a show to be had at The Snug Theatre, or satisfy your cravings at Marine City Fish Company. What’s not to love?

6. Milford

Hop in the car and enjoy a 40-mile drive to Milford, which might be most famous as the home of Kensington Metropark. Whether you’re at the 4,543-acre park for a day of sledding, hiking, or sunbathing, you’ll never run out of natural beauty to appreciate. Round it out with a meal at Smoke Street before venturing back toward Detroit.

7. Armada

This Macomb County gem is one of the smallest towns on our list, housing a year-round population of just over 1,700 residents. Don’t let its tiny size fool you, though: many visitors flock here annually to check out the Armada Fair, Blake’s Orchard & Cider Mill, and the Armada Flea Market. You’ll wonder why it took you so long to appreciate this rural gem.

8. Port Sanilac

This village of under 1,000 is situated on the shores of Lake Huron, offering some of the prettiest sunrises in the entire Great Lakes State. Whether you’re admiring the Port Sanilac Lighthouse, learning more at the Sanilac County Historic Village & Museum, or simply walking near the harbor, you’ll easily fall in love with this tiny town.

9. Milan

Milan can be reached from Detroit in approximately 50 minutes, rendering it just far enough away to offer an escape and just close enough to make for an awesome day trip. If you’re seeking a quiet getaway, look no further: Milan offers natural areas like Draper-Houston Meadows Preserve and Wilson Park that are great for some outdoor fun. After taking a stroll, grab a bite to eat at Milan Coney Island.
