Searching for a day trip from Detroit that will keep the entire family entertained? While many communities surrounding the Motor City offer natural areas, quaint shopping spots, and eateries galore, there’s one decidedly unique town within driving distance of Detroit that offers a vibe unlike anything you've experienced. If you’re a fan of all things quirky and creative, you’ll have a blast exploring this locale.
Ypsilanti is located in Washtenaw County, just 40 minutes by car from Detroit. While many Michiganders know it as the home of Eastern Michigan University, its appeal is far-reaching.
With a population of just over 20,000 residents, Ypsilanti qualifies as a mid-sized city, but you’ll feel a real sense of community when you spend time here. There’s so much to enjoy.
Known affectionately as “Ypsi” by many locals, the town is home to an impressive array of attractions and recreational options that will help you connect with your adventurous, creative side.
Kick off the day with a walk at Frog Island Park, which houses a three-pointed “tridge,” an amphitheater for community use, and a lush community garden that blooms during spring and summer.
Of course, no day trip is complete without some shopping, and Ypsi provides plenty of quirky options. Our favorite is Unicorn Feed & Supply, a whimsical, unicorn-themed shop downtown.
Stop in to snag some candy and inventive gifts before enjoying a tasty meal from STUFD, a local treasure that prides itself on serving some of the largest burritos you’ve ever seen.
History buffs will enjoy perusing the Michigan Firehouse Museum or the Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Museum. We mean it when we say that there’s something here for everyone!
Buy some antiques for your next project at Materials Unlimited before calling it a day. No matter how many times you’ve checked out this fascinating town, there’s always more to uncover.
