This is a great time of year to enjoy fall foliage in Colorado, and the Pikes Peak Cog Railway is an exciting ride that takes up all the way up to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak. Check it out!
The Pikes Peak Cog Railway trip takes you 8.1 miles up to the peak. It's a 3 hour and 10 minute trip.
Start your journey at the rail station. You can purchase a snack, or oxygen (which you might need if you're not accustomed to high altitudes). Make sure to bring a jacket - it's very cold at the top.
The railroad uses a double-cog system that allows it to climb the very steep grade. The train's top speed is just nine mph.
At the beginning of your journey, the steep track takes you through towering aspens, spruce and pines.
Watch for wildlife - Pikes Peak is home to one of the world's largest herds of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep.

The end of the line. It's a looong way down.
You'll have 30-40 minutes at the top to take in the view. You'll likely start feeling a bit of altitude sickness after about 30 minutes.
The view pretty much speaks for itself. You'll definitely want to bring your camera for this trip.
