Delaware's a tiny state, but because Slower Lower is so rural, there are plenty of towns that you might never stumble upon if you don't make it a point to visit. All of these small, rural Delaware towns are really in the middle of nowhere, and they're tiny towns with a huge sense of community. They aren't boring, either, despite their locations far away from the busier sections of the state. Each has its own attractions and restaurants so you can hit the road for a serene, scenic day trip at any time. Below, find the rural Delaware towns that made the list, and what you can do once you get all the way out there!
1. Marydel
Marydel is a small town right on the border of - you guessed it - Maryland and Delaware. And while the town isn't winning any awards for creativity, it does deserve a mention for its historic significance and beautiful vineyard. The town is right on the Mason-Dixon line and you can find the line's cornerstone marker in town. As for the wine - Harvest Ridge Winery is worth the drive all on its own.
2. Felton
Felton is a tiny farm town that's home to one of the best state parks in Delaware - Killens Pond. There's also the delicious produce from Paradise Orchard all over Felton, so you can stop and grab some fresh peaches on your way into town. The historic railroad sites are worth checking out, too.
3. Seaford
Seaford is the place to be if you want to enjoy some time outdoors. Float the Nanticoke River once the weather warms up! In the meantime, visit the haunted Governor Ross Mansion and learn about the history of this slower lower town.
4. Bethel
The tiny, tiny town of Bethel, Delaware might have no more than 180 residents, but that doesn't stop it from being worth a day trip drive. It was once a bustling ship-building town, and walking along Broad Creek will leave you with views to die for and a sense of quiet and calm that's hard to find anywhere else.
5. Greenwood
Greenwood is a rural town between two other rural towns - Farmington and Bridgeville. Talk about the middle of nowhere! Despite that, Greenwood is home to a restaurant that we really do love - Cafe Tamburelli's on Market Street.
6. Selbyville
Selbyville may be the busiest town of the ones on the list, but if you think about it, it really is in the middle of nowhere! It's at least 10 miles from any other bustling civilization, and even farther from any major town. Despite the remote location, Selbyville residents make the most out of it, and the town events that they host are so much fun that they draw visitors from around the state and Maryland. Be sure to check out Selbyville's Old Timer's Day, held every June, and see why this is one of the best small towns in Delaware.
7. Delmar
Another cleverly named border town, Delmar was once the Strawberry Capital of the United States, and this small Delaware town is still a big agricultural center. It's also where you can stand in both Maryland and Delaware, and see the marker for the transpeninsular line!
These small, rural Delaware towns are all so isolated that you might even forget you're in Delaware at all - which is something we're not used to! If you can't get enough of rural life, you'll love our list of small towns with amazing restaurants in Delaware, too.
