Delaware's an old-fashioned state, and we take our history seriously. There are a few towns that truly retain their historic charm, and if you want to feel like you've stepped back in time, visit these old fashioned Delaware towns and get in touch with the First State.
1. Georgetown
Georgetown is a little city that's stuck in time. You'll still feel the spirit of the colonial founders of the city as you walk the streets and explore the Circle. Visit on Return Day after November elections to participate in a timeless tradition that dates back to the Founding Fathers.
2. Rehoboth Beach
Rehoboth Beach never seems to change! You can still enjoy burgers from Gus and Gus, get Dolles taffy stuck in your teeth, and splash in the sand like you did as a kid - and this city will always have a place in our hearts.
3. Delaware City
Delaware City is the most haunted town in the state, but it's got more than spirits to connect it to the past! The history of Fort Delaware, the Delaware City Hotel, and the other classic buildings are on display as you stroll the streets along the waterfront.
4. Bowers Beach
Bowers Beach is a fishing town that's always a great place to escape. The old fashioned mariner lifestyle is what keeps this town going, and hanging out on the shoreline watching the oyster schooners come in and go out is a great way to see living history.
5. Lewes
Lewes is a historic town that was the very first settlement in Delaware! You can still experience the history of this town by visiting the Zwaanendael museum and walking through the canalfront park.
6. New Castle
New Castle's charming historic district is one of the best places in Delaware! Walk the green or enjoy the waterfront if you love being outside, or stroll the historic area by the New Castle County Courthouse to see notable homes and buildings.
7. Bethany Beach
Bethany Beach has been a seaside retreat for Delawareans for generations, and that's never going to change! Enjoy the beach, boardwalk, restaurants and Nature Center with your family and relive your favorite childhood memories in this quiet beach town.
8. Dover
There's nothing quite like walking through the Green and down Loockerman Street to feel like you're a part of modern day history. Dover was an important city in the founding of America, and it continues to be the center of Delaware's political culture. This bustling town retains all of its old fashioned charm in the historic center of town.
9. Milford
Milford is a charming little town with a downtown district that's always alive! Stroll the riverwalk on any clear day, or join them for their festivals! In June, the Brewgrass Festival is a blast, and Saturday, April 28th, you can join them for their "bug and bud" festival welcoming spring.
Have you visited each town on this list? If you can only make it to one, make it Lewes. There's something oh so special about the This Is The Oldest Place You Can Possibly Go In Delaware, and you'll have the time of your life!
