Lewes is a lovely town right on Cape Henlopen, where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. It was the First Town settled in the First State, and its streets are full of history and charm. Because of its amazing location, scenery, and architecture, we think that it's the most beautiful town in Delaware - do you agree?
On your way into town, you'll pass beautiful fields and salt marshes.
Keep an eye out for migratory birds that make their home along the Delaware Bay. Great Blue Herons, Bald Eagles, and the endangered Red Knot are known to nest in Delaware.
The town offers some amazing views from the World War II observation tower in Cape Henlopen State Park.
You can also explore the ruins of a historic military site at the Fort Miles Historic Area.
The town's history is on display along the water and downtown.
You'll see cannons, historic markers, and even a cannonball still lodged in a house - from the war of 1812!
Fisherman's Wharf is always a sight to see.
The active wharf is home to fishing boats, charters, and whale watching cruises. You'll see all sorts of beautiful ships coming in and out all day.
The Canal is beautiful when it is lit up in the evening.
Water views are always spectacular here, but the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal and all of the canal front amenities such as parks, docks and restaurants make this a truly special place in the state of Delaware.
Perhaps Delaware's most photographed landmark can be seen from the shoreline.
The Breakwater Lighthouse and the Harbor of Refuge have been guiding ships safety in the Lewes harbor since 1892 and 1901, respectively. They provide an incredible backdrop to the many marine scenes that unfold here.
Of course, because Lewes is right on the Atlantic Ocean, the sunrises here are spectacular.
Watching the sun rise over the water from the dunes of the cape is perhaps the most enchanting experience you can have in Delaware.
And on the other side, sunsets over the bay are just as breathtaking.
Lewes is our own little slice of heaven for so many reasons, and the spectacular sunsets are just one of the reasons that so many people stick around this town.
Delaware is full of beautiful towns, and if you love Lewes, you should set aside time to visit another town that's completely surrounded by natural beauty - our little town of Laurel.
