In Connecticut, we have 169 towns and quite a few villages. Each place in our small state has its own unique charm and something special to offer its visitors. Even the smallest towns in the Nutmeg State are unique in their own way. If you are looking to explore someplace new, why not venture into one of our smaller towns that are always worth a visit.

1. Union

Union is our tiniest town by population with only 854 residents at the 2010 census. This town is perfect for the outdoors lover. Visit Bigelow Hollow State Park, Mashapaug Lake, and Break Neck Pond for plenty of nature loving activities. While you are in Union, make sure you stop by the notable Traveler Restaurant that gives away a free book to each of its customers.

2. Canaan

Tucked away in Litchfield County is our second smallest town by population. Canaan is best known for the breathtaking waterfall in Falls Village. Great Falls is the highest volume waterfall in Connecticut and is a treasured gem to area photographers. While you are in town, eat at the retro Collins Diner which will take you straight back in time.

3. Cornwall

Cornwall is easily recognizable by its iconic covered bridge. But the small town is also home to Mowhawk Mountain Ski Area which is the state largest ski and snowboard resort. Cornwall is also a hidden paradise for kayaking, canoeing, and fly-fishing.

4. Warren

Warren is the fourth smallest town by population with 1,461 residents at the 2010 census. This tiny town boasts the beautiful Lake Waramaug State Park. For even more exceptional scenery visit Hopkins Vineyard to relax with a glass of wine in a fantastic setting.

5. Norfolk

Norfolk is the music capital of the northwest part of Connecticut. Infinity Hall is an immaculately restored theater that dates back to 1883. Year-round performances attract many patrons and the attached bistro offers wonderful food.

6. Bridgewater

Bridgewater is not only one of the smallest towns in Connecticut it was one of the driest until 2014. Just three years ago, voters approved the sale of alcohol in the town. Visit Promisek's Historic Garden, one of the state's most beautiful spots while you are in town, but you'll need to call ahead for an appointment.

7. Eastford

Eastford has one of the most interesting photo opportunities in the Nutmeg State. Make sure you bring your camera and stop by the Frog Rock Rest Area for some selfies and a bite to eat. You can also enjoy some solitude with a hike through the beautiful Nachaug State Forest.

8. Hampton

Hampton is home to the Congregational Church which is the second oldest church in Connecticut. Explore this and other historical buildings while you are in town. Go hiking around or kayaking on Pine Acres Lake for a great outdoors afternoon.

9. Plainville

Plainville is not so small in population as it is in area, with just over nine square miles in its borders, it is the smallest town by land area in Connecticut. Visit Sunset Rock State Park to do a little rock climbing or relax with a cold beer at Relic Brewing Company.

10. Middlefield

The second smallest town in the Nutmeg State by area is Middlefield. You'll want to pay a visit to Lyman Orchards and pick some fruit from their orchards or stop at the farm store to purchase a fabulous pie. This town way out in the country has some wonderful scenic roads as well.
