One of my favorite things about Connecticut is all the opportunities for outdoor adventure here. From our epic shoreline to our many forests and state parks, there are so many choices when it comes to Nutmeg State recreational activities. Whether you're in a quiet rural area or one of our larger towns, you're never too far from a scenic park where you can enjoy a picnic, hike, or time on the water. Of course, some places boast more outdoor attractions than others, and one of the state's best areas for enjoying nature is the small town of Essex. This place only has a population of about 6,700, but it's been nationally-recognized as one of the country's coolest small towns, and there's so much to do here. Here are a few of our favorite outdoor attractions in Essex, CT:
Essex sits right on the Connecticut River, so if you're looking to enjoy a waterfront stroll or watch the boats come in, this is the place for you.
Another great body of water to admire in Essex is Sunset Pond. This is a popular spot for fishing in the warm weather months and ice skating in in the winter.
You'll also find a number of great parks in Essex, CT.
Comstock Fields is a quiet park with a few hiking trails, plus a baseball and soccer field.
Looking for a place the kids can let some of their energy out? Grove Street Park and Playground is a wonderful option.
If you prefer to enjoy nature in a slightly more urban environment, the Main Street area of Essex has a charming town green that plays host to many local festivals and events.
The newest park in Essex is Viney Hill Brook Park. Here, you'll find a dog park, nature trails, and even a swimming area that's open seasonally.
