I love traveling in the fall. Fall in Connecticut is such a great time, and while it can feel like summer vacations get all the publicity, those of us who prefer cooler temperatures know that autumn vacations and day trips are the way to go. The scenery is magnificent, there are festivals and events galore, and everything just feels cheery and bright heading into the holiday season. It's a wonderful time of year to check out some of our many small towns. One of our favorite fall day trips in Connecticut is the little town of East Haddam. This is such a scenic place, and it looks all the more amazing when surrounded by fall foliage. Check it out:
East Haddam is a Middlesex County town of about 8,500 people. It's a wonderful size: large enough to have amenities, but not so big that it feels overcome by urban landscape.
One of my favorite things about East Haddam is the abundance of outdoor recreational attractions here. Devil's Hopyard State Park is one of the best parks in the state, with a covered bridge, waterfalls, hiking trails, and more.
Plus, this park is allegedly one of the most

You'll also find Gillette Castle State Park here. Not only is it home to a historic castle, it's also got breathtaking natural views.

If you're hoping for family-friendly events to take the kids to, Ray of Light Farm offers an adorable adventure with its annual Not-So-Scary-Halloween Drive Thru.

The East Haddam Swing Bridge is such a cool architectural feat! Opened in 1913, it was once the longest bridge of its kind in the world.
And there's nothing like admiring the changing leaves over a body of water, is there?
If you're looking to enjoy some seasonal treats, make a visit to Yankee Cider Co. at Staehly Farm.
Pair your freshly-brewed cider with a tasty donut at this

This is such a magnificent area that's made even better in the fall.
