It can sometimes be tough to find the time (and money) for an extended out-of-state vacation lasting a week or so, but most of us are able to find the ability to take a three-day trip at least once within a calendar year. If you aren't able to travel far, don't sweat it! There are plenty of great towns and road trips in Connecticut that you can enjoy with just two or three free days. Here are a few of our favorite weekend trips in Connecticut:

1. Essex

If you love getting outdoors and exploring, you'll find plenty of things to do in Essex, CT. This town has been named one of the coolest small towns in the country. The population is under 7,000, but there are tons of great parks here, and it's right on the Connecticut River. The downtown area is filled with shops and restaurants, and the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat is a wonderful way to explore the area.

2. Hartford

As the state capital, you'd think that Hartford would be considered a great tourist destination, but many dismiss it due to its reputation as a business center. In truth, it rightfully known as the insurance capital of the world, but that doesn't mean there aren't tons of attractions in Hartford, CT. Whether you're interested in nature, museums, or delicious restaurants, there's something for everyone to enjoy here. We love the Elizabeth Park Conservancy, which is home to one of the state's most beautiful rose gardens.

3. Kent

Many people are familiar with Kent despite it being a small town of under 5,000 residents. It's home to the magnificent Kent Falls, the tallest waterfall in Connecticut (and the centerpiece of a gorgeous state park that shares its name). However, there are plenty of other things to do in Kent, CT. This charming little town has several great museums, plus some delightful stores and restaurants that are worth a visit.

4. Mystic

Mystic is easily one of the best small towns in Connecticut, and despite its teensy tiny population, you'll find plenty to entertain you here. The Mystic Aquarium is one of the top animal attractions in New England, and you won't find many museums better than the Mystic Seaport Museum. Olde Mistick Village is a charming collection of colonial-style shops that is a great place to support local business. The town gained national prominence when the cult classic film Mystic Pizza was released in 1988. You can still visit the real-life Mystic Pizza restaurant today for a slice of 'za, though it's doubtful you'll see Julia Roberts there.

5. New Haven

We love New Haven: it's perfect for a visit at any time of year. It's a walkable city that's got many of its attractions within just a few blocks of one another. The Wooster Square area is perfect for strolling and sight-seeing. Since Yale University is located here, there's a great cultural scene and plenty of museums, like the Yale Center for British Art. Don't miss a visit to Frank Pepe Pizzeria. It's one of the oldest restaurants in the state and is the inventor of Connecticut-style apizza.

6. Putnam

Nestled in the northeast Quiet Corner you'll find the little town of Putnam. With a population of around 7,000 and a location in this area, you might not think there's too much to do, but you'll find tons of attractions in Putnam, CT. The laid back little town is perfect for a day of shopping, and there are a number of amazing restaurants here. Parking is free, and the downtown historic district is full of charming old mill buildings.
