Isn't Colorado the greatest? Not only do we have varying landscapes, great jobs, and something new to try every weekend, we also have access to epic staycations that other states could never dream of! Speaking of staycations, have you ever taken the time to REALLY experience what the often overlooked Western Slope has to offer? If you haven't (or even if you have), start making arrangements now to take this once-in-a-lifetime trip around scenic and exciting western Colorado:
1. Mesa Verde National Park (Montezuma County)
It doesn't matter whether you begin or end here, just be sure you take the time to visit the incredible Mesa Verde National Park; one of the most famous landmarks in Colorado that houses more than 4,300 of the best preserved Ancestral Puebloan archeological sites in the country.
2. Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (Durango)
In case you didn't know, Durango is one of the coolest towns in Colorado, so we highly recommend you spend a day checking out the many shops and restaurants that this charming area has to offer! If you are running short on time and can only do one thing, however, we recommend hopping aboard the scenic Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (which has been running since 1882)!
3. Four Corners
Sure, you may often feel like you have to be in 4 places at once, but have you actually done it? You can at the Four Corners, which sits on the very southwest corner of the state, connecting Colorado with Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona. (Psst... don't forget to take a kitschy photo of yourself sprawled out over the monument -- it's a must!)
4. Grand Junction
Why take an expensive trip to Napa Valley when Colorado has its own equally delicious vineyards and wineries? Welcome to Colorado wine country, which is located in and around Grand Junction! (Pictured is the gorgeous Desert Sun Vineyards. For a full list of area wineries, check out the Grand Junction Visitor & Convention Bureau's website.)
5. Gateway Canyons
Before going home, it is time to get out and explore incredible Gateway, Colorado! Make reservations to stay the night at the luxurious Gateway Canyons Resort (pictured), hike the giant plateaus, or simply take a drive around this unique part of the state.
