Colorado is home to countless small towns that can only be described as charming. However, on the flip side, our beloved state is also home to a few dark and disturbing areas, including this spooky small town that could be straight out of a horror movie:
Located in south central Colorado lies the iconic town of Cañon City; a popular state destination that is home to nearly 17,000 residents and some of Colorado's most famous attractions.
Incorporated in 1872, Cañon City was originally founded as a mining settlement and later became a vital area for commercial oil fields, and is now a popular Colorado destination for its outdoor recreational opportunities,...
...world-famous Royal Gorge Bridge...
...and historic downtown district.
However, with all of the charm that comes with Cañon City comes a darker and more sinister side, like the alleged hauntings at the old St. Cloud Hotel...
Built in 1888, the St. Cloud Hotel is said to be haunted by the ghosts of mischievous children who enjoy playing pranks on staff and guests alike. (Don't worry; they are in no way threatening. Kids will always be kids!)
...and the Colorado Prison Museum.
According to reports by both visitors and museum staff, there have been several unexplainable occurrences since the museum first opened, including screams and strange mumbling, the sight of orbs, and even the smell of tobacco (when nobody is around).
Is Cañon City really haunted or is it mere folklore? Visit this weekend and let us know what you think!
