Autumn has graced Northeast Ohio with its palette, and the splendor of the foliage is simply entrancing. In Cleveland, we feel the threatening creep of cold weather, which rears its ugly head every so often and gives us an unpleasantly chilly day or two. While it is still somewhat warm and while there are still leaves on the trees, you must get out and celebrate the season. Don't stress, though! There are plenty of great ways to spend your days in Greater Cleveland.
1. Shoot the Pumpkin Cannon at Luther's Farm Market (5150 Alger Road, Richfield)
The Luther family has farmed land in Richfield for over 100 years, and now you can experience the farm during its most festive season. Fall Fest takes place on weekends throughout October, and you don't want to miss it. Admission is only $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 5 to 12.
2. Take a lazy stroll around Wade Lagoon (10820 East Boulevard, Cleveland)
Wade Park is located within University Circle and is bordered by museums. The lagoon is stunning year round, but is particularly beautiful in autumn, thanks in part to its exquisite decor that seems to have overflowed from the Cleveland Museum of Art. While you are out, explore the intricate architecture of University Circle and consider stopping in at a museum or two!
3. Go on a waterfall road trip.
There are so many beautiful waterfalls hiding in plain sight in Cleveland, and they truly possess a magical sort of energy during the autumn months. Pictured here is Olmsted Falls' David Fortier River Park waterfall, located off of Water Street.
4. Swing by Hinckley Reservation (1822 East Drive, Hinckley)
Here, the largest inland lake in the Cleveland Metroparks glimmers and gleams against the bold reds and yellows that have begun to line its shores. Hinckley Reservation features 87 surface acres of water, as well as a collection of sandstone ledges that tower 350 feet over the property.
5. Explore a charming small town.
Nothing captures the autumn spirit quite like quaint Midwestern towns. Explore areas like Peninsula, Hudson, and Medina for a friendly experience in a beautiful environment.
6. Visit the James A. Garfield Monument (12316 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland)
Lakeview Cemetery is a spooky-cool way to spend an autumn day. Not only are its impeccably manicured grounds stunning, but this presidential monument offers unrivaled views of Downtown Cleveland. Plus, the memorial is the only presidential monument to display the deceased president's actual casket.
7. Pursue autumn adventure at Derthick’s Corn Maze & Farm Experience (5182 State Route 82, Mantua)
Open September 17 through October 31, 2021, this experience is truly incredible. The farm features two 300-foot ziplines, an incredible pumpkin patch, and an overall unforgettable experience.
8. Attend a local fall festival.
There truly isn't a more enjoyable way to kick off autumn! Gather some friends and get ready to down some cider, because Northeast Ohio's fall festivals are especially unforgettable.
9. Experience Pumpkin Pandemonium at Heritage Farms (6050 Riverview Road, Peninsula)
Beginning September 25 and continuing through October 24, 2021, this celebration is exceptionally festive. Pick pumpkins, take a hayride, or go on a scavenger hunt on this beautiful farm. On select dates, fairies make guest appearances at the farm!
10. Embark on a foliage-viewing train excursion.
Enjoy a unique seasonal excursion through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Fall Flyer tours take place on Saturdays and Sundays during the month of October. Depart from Rockside Station, located at 7900 Old Rockside Road in Independence, at 9:45 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Coach tickets are $20 apiece, or you can upgrade to the dining car for just $25 per ticket.
