Every so often, it's nice to plan a getaway. Of course, such an adventure typically involves journeying to a new place where life moves at a different place. For many, this requires a trip to a faraway state or country. For Ohioans, our 88 counties offer much to explore, ranging from impressive industrial cities to antique Midwestern towns. One such Midwestern town approximately an hour outside of Cleveland has charm, adventure, and some famously friendly residents. If you live in Northeast Ohio, you must plan a visit.
Welcome to Ashland, Ohio!
This small town of about 20,000 residents is only about an hour outside of Cleveland, but it offers an entirely different lifestyle. It is both rural and historic, and its charm is unbeatable.
Ashland considers itself to be "The World Headquarters of Nice People."
The city was laid out as Uniontown in 1815, but it would ultimately adopt the name Ashland in 1822, as there was already another Uniontown in the state. The name was actually chosen by supporters of Henry Clay, a Kentucky Congressman who participated in several presidential campaigns and founded the Whig Party. His estate near Lexington bears the name of Ashland.
Life in Ashland is decidedly laid-back.
Spectacular countryside full of rolling hills and manicured fields surround the city, and the entirety of Ashland County is blessed with such views. Free from heavy pollution and industry, the air in this region feels somehow crisper, and you are surrounded by the blissful sounds of nature practically everywhere you go.
Though it's a small area, Ashland offers much to enjoy.
Walk the streets of the historic district, stroll through some mom and pop shops, or explore the Historical Society museum.
During your visit, you must visit Grandpa's Cheesebarn...
Grandpa's Cheesebarn is perhaps one of the more famous attractions in Ashland. Though it was once a working dairy farm, it now is one of the best places to pick up local cheeses and other Ohio-made treats.
...And it's definitely worth exploring Local Roots.
Local Roots is one of the coolest markets around. Find handmade goodies, seasonal produce, and gourmet cheeses at this Ohio-grown store!
Plan to visit during a local event for a particularly unforgettable experience.
Enjoy events such as performances by the Ashland Symphony Orchestra, local shows at the Myers Memorial Bandshell, or participate in a local festival.
Whether you are hoping for an unmatched shopping experience...
Enjoy Farm Markets, artsy downtown district shops, or visit a number of neat local shops you won't find anywhere else.
