The holiday season is a time when we reminisce about years past and think back on traditions and experiences that make this Christmastime so special. Cincinnati has always done a beautiful job of transforming into a festive, magical place to celebrate and experience the holiday season. Downtown, especially, has always been a popular destination during the month of December for Christmas lights, a special meal, and viewing charming displays. Many remember the time of the golden years of Christmastime in downtown Cincinnati, and these vintage photos will take you back to those treasured memories.
1. Fountain Square has always been the center of the holiday fun in Cincinnati.
Although the Square and Fountain look much different now, it's mesmerizing to look back on this photo and remember how it once was. The lights, the hustle and bustle of shoppers - it was a magical experience straight out of a movie.
2. The collection of Christmas trees on the Square was a tradition to visit.
This photo appears to be from the 1960s, when it was a popular tradition to visit downtown and the collection of beautiful trees that decorated the square.
3. When many think of Christmastime in Cincinnati, they immediately think of Shillito's.
CIncinnati's popular department store was an exciting place at Christmas and the stunning lights on the exterior made it easy to find.
4. And of course, viewing the Shillito's Elves was a must.
These charming elves were working hard in Santa's Workshop to prepare for Christmas. Thankfully, you can continue this tradition today and visit the same displays in Mariemont.
5. Experiencing the joy of live music and friendly meetings.
Today, as you walk through outdoor malls, you may hear Christmas music piped through a stereo system, but in the past you would hear the sounds of live music and perhaps even carolers. Downtown department stores, like Pogue's, would be spotted with musicians eager to entertain and greet festive shoppers.
6. A visit to the CG&E Train Display was a longstanding tradition.
It was a Christmastime necessity to join the crowds in the lobby of what was CG&E to view the large, nostalgic train display. Trains have always been an enchanting part of Christmas and this was the ultimate experience.
7. The trains later moved to Union Terminal.
This photo may not be quite as vintage as the others (it's from the early 90s), but with the construction happening now at Union Terminal, it's nice to remember this scene. Once the renovations and restorations are complete, we'll be able to experience the vintage train display once again.
8. A snowy day downtown has always been a lovely sight.
What a quintessential Cincinnati scene! A Metro bus driving on its route through the snow falling in our beautiful downtown.
9. In a few decades, Cincinnatians will look back on this photo and reminisce about the beauty of downtown that we can experience today.
This photo is not vintage, but it's important to remember that there is still so much holiday cheer to experience downtown! The classic destinations may be gone, but you can now ice skate among the lights on the Square, view the magnificent tree in the lobby of The Westin, and catch a performance at The Aronoff Center. The memories we make today will be the ones we will look back on in the years to come.
