Northern California is a big place, and therefore there are seemingly an endless amount of roads to choose from when you find yourself in the mood for taking a scenic drive. There are few things as relaxing as cruising down one of our region's beautiful highways while taking in the scenery. However, if you find yourself in the mood for a more thrilling adventure then you'll want to consider taking a drive down Northern California's windiest road. This highway is full of twists and turns, and it's really not for the faint of heart. Think you can take it?
Do you ever find yourself craving a thrill? The next time the mood strikes, consider taking a drive down Northern California's curviest road: Highway 36.
Beginning in Humboldt County, the highway twists and turns for 140 miles until you wind up just east of Susanville in Lassen County.
All in all, the highway takes you through six different counties and a variety of climates and landscapes. That's the beauty of Northern California—the landscape never gets boring. You'll see everything from the coast, to mountain pine forests, valleys, redwoods, and small towns as you traverse this incredible highway.
Along with being noted as one of California's windiest highways, Highway 36 also boasts some incredible scenery. It's not long after you set out onto the highway that you're soon enveloped by the breathtaking Trinity National Forest. At an elevation of 3,000 feet, the views are pretty spectacular.
The gorgeous scenery makes all the twisting and turning well worth the effort. Although the road is very well-surfaced, this is potentially a treacherous drive so be sure to go nice and slow.
Highway 36 is considered one of the best motorcycle rides in all of California, but it's definitely not for beginners. Many drivers say that after accomplishing this road, every other road looks easy.
At some points on the highway, there are no other cars or humans to be seen for miles. There's a feeling of utter isolation, and with that a sense of peacefulness. The switchbacks are sure to keep you awake, but the scenery will bring you a sense of calm.
Do you think you're brave enough to manage Highway 36? This is a journey that you definitely don't want to miss out on.
There are a few things to keep in mind if you decide to set out on this exhilarating highway. There are not many gas stations along the way, so be sure to fill up your tank beforehand and pack necessities like food and water. Use caution and go slow, especially during potentially wet or slippery conditions.
Have you driven down this winding road? What was your impression of it? We're so fortunate to live in a region that is full of scenic drives. In fact, one of the most scenic drives in America is right here in NorCal. Click here to check it out.
