Need a little island getaway to rest and recharge? Check out these six islands in Southern California that will satisfy the explorer in you. Whether you're looking for a remote island for quiet and solitude or an island bustling with people and activities, these six heavenly destinations offer a little something for everyone. Ready for a summer adventure?!
1. Naples Island in Long Beach
You don't have to head to Italy to take a romantic gondola ride. Just make your way to Naples Island in Long Beach and experience the charm of Italy right here in SoCal. This spot is 1 of only 8 locations in the entire US where you can take a gondola tour. While you're visiting the area, you can also rent kayaks, hydro bikes and paddle boards.
2. Balboa Island
A popular destination in Newport Beach perfect for a family getaway. Balboa Island isn't only a great vacation spot, but it's also a wonderful place to live. With some of the most expensive real estate in all of Orange County, you might have to hit the jackpot to snag a house in this area.
3. Catalina Island
This dazzling destination feels like it's right out of the movies. To get to Catalina Island by ferry, you can catch a boat in Long Beach, Newport Beach, Dana Point or San Pedro for a 1-hour ride. Once there, you can explore the island on foot and take in the beautiful surroundings of this stunning location. This is quite possibly my favorite place in all of Southern California.
4. Santa Cruz Island -- Channel Islands National Park
Located within Santa Barbara County, this island is part of Channel Islands National Park. Owned and maintained by the Nature Conservancy and National Park Service, it's a wonderful destination to experience wildlife and rare plant species. Transportation to and from the island can be tricky, challenging and expensive, so make sure you plan ahead before you head out as pre-planning is definitely required.
5. Anacapa Island -- Channel Islands National Park
Anacapa Island is another island that comprises Channel Islands National Park. Once you arrive, be prepared to rough it, as you won't find lodging or dining on this island. Camping is allowed here at seven different campsites, so make sure to pack a tent and blanket for your overnighter.
6. Santa Rosa Island -- Channel Islands National Park
Also part of Channel Islands National Park, Santa Rosa Island is the second-largest of the eight Channel Islands of California. During your visit to Santa Rosa Island, you can enjoy some hiking and kayaking while taking in the mind-blowing scenery.
Ready for an island tour? Although my heart will always be with Catalina Island, I think I'll head to all of these locations this summer for a little adventure. Which one is at the top of your list?
