Finding a peaceful town in Northern California is an easy task. There are so many small towns and cities that are friendly, safe, and picturesque. But if we had to choose just one that really stands out, we’d choose Mill Valley. This peaceful city in Northern California is located in Marin County. Its small downtown is very walkable, with lots to see and do. Outside of the downtown area, there are many beautiful parks, including Muir Woods National Monument.
Mill Valley is a peaceful and charming city with a population of 14,105.
Within Mill Valley, there is the beautiful downtown with historic buildings, quaint shops, and a small main square where you can spend some time people watching or playing chess.
There is always something new to see in Depot Plaza.
This plaza in the heart of downtown is home to a rotating arts display put on by the City of Mill Valley and Mill Valley Arts Commission.
The downtown area is rustic, charming, and upscale at the same time.
The area is very lush and green, with redwoods as well as beautiful flowers and plants in the manicured areas of downtown.
There are many fantastic shops and restaurants in downtown Mill Valley.
You’ll find specialty home stores, clothing shops, plus a theater and live music venue.
Stop inside the Mill Valley Market to grab some local wine and cheese.
This family-owned grocery store was started in 1929 and was moved to its current location in 1955.
Inside the market you’ll also find a deli. This is a great place to grab lunch for a picnic at one of the beautiful Mill Valley parks.
Even if you don’t have a Mill Valley library card, you have to check out the absolutely stunning Mill Valley Public Library.
This gorgeous library is a book lover's dream. Read a book in a cozy chair next to a two-story window overlooking the towering redwoods. Or rest outside on the spacious deck.
In addition to Muir Woods National Monument, Mill Valley is also where you’ll find Mount Tamalpais.
If you’ve seen those stunning places, check out the Bothin Marsh Preserve. This tidal wetlands area is a six-minute drive from downtown Mill Valley.
There is a walkable pathway that runs through the marsh. This is a great place to bird watch since it is a rest stop for more than 400 species of migratory birds.
Bring hiking shoes to take the out-and-back Cascade Falls Trail.
This 0.5-mile trail is a beautiful trek to a waterfall. Can you believe all of this is in one city?
