So if you're seeing some adventure without straining your wallet, these wallet-friendly road trip destinations are a testament to the fact that embarking on a memorable journey doesn't have to break the bank.
1. South Lake Tahoe
The drive to South Lake Tahoe is absolutely beautiful.
There’s a lot to do in the Tahoe area aside from skiing, fine dining, boating, and gambling across the stateline.
South Lake Tahoe is home to several beaches, as well as one of the most scenic bike trails in the area. The Pope Baldwin Bike Path is a 7.2-mile path that runs alongside the lake. Bring your bikes to travel along this trail. Or, take a long walk around the South Lake Tahoe area, and stop at The Red Hut Cafe for a coffee and some pancakes.
2. Bodega Bay
This small coastal town is located right off of State Route 1 in Sonoma County.
Take a road trip to Bodega Bay and relax on the beach all day.
There are a lot of beautiful beaches in Northern California, but locals really love this beach for its scenic coastline, lookout points, and charming small fishing town. Pack a cooler with sandwiches and snacks for the beach. On the way out of town, stop at Patrick’s of Bodega Bay for some delicious saltwater taffy.
3. Chico
The Northern California town of Chico makes for an ideal inexpensive road trip destination that is affordable.
First, check out the massive Bidwell Park. With trails, multiple swimming holes, a dog park, and a natural pool and picnic area, there is plenty to explore at this massive park.
Then, walk around the downtown area and window shop. Since this is a college town, you’ll find reasonable prices at many of the local shops. One of the most affordable and delicious restaurants in NorCal is located a short drive from downtown. La Comida serves tasty Mexican food at affordable prices.
4. Colusa
Take a trip along Interstate 5 to reach this charming country town.
Whether you’re coming from the north or south, on the way to Colusa you’ll pass fruit and nut stands.
Be sure to stop and pick-up some fresh California produce and nuts. Colusa is located on the Sacramento River. Have a picnic on the scenic riverbank at the Colusa Levee Scenic Park. Then explore the downtown area where you can see some well-preserved Victorian homes.
5. Avenue of the Giants
This 31-mile road runs next to Highway 101 in Northern California.
This fairytale-like forest is something you’ll never forget.
The photos just don’t do it justice! You’ll be awe-struck by these massive towering trees and green mossy-landscape. Along this famous road there are many places to pull-over to admire the redwoods and take photos.
