When I think about places that scream SoCal, there are just so many stunning buildings, picturesque beaches, scenic overlooks, and unique destinations that really seem to define this amazing part of the state. It would truly be impossible to put them all in one day trip. For now, I have chosen seven wildly different spots that, to me, are among the most iconic views in Southern California.
The map says this route will take just over three hours, and I have rounded up a little for brief photo pauses, but let's be honest, it will probably take longer. If you live here, you know that there is often traffic that slows things down. Besides, at some of these spots, you will find it hard to stop for a minute and move on, so I would definitely count on some extra time to savor and explore.
You can click on the interactive map above to customize your trip, adding or removing sites to make for the perfect day.
The first stop is the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. The historic building and grounds are gorgeous, so you may want to spend a little time here. The main event, however, is the view from the famous Clock Tower. From the top, you will take in breathtaking panoramic views of Santa Barbara with its distinctive red tile roofs, palm trees, and the Pacific coastline.
From Santa Barbara, head south along the coast and onto the popular Pacific Coast Highway for a quick stop at Point Mugu. You will pass between this massive rock and the mountains, then find a spot to park along the beach on the other side. Turn back to take a classic photo of this massive promontory.
Less than 15 minutes down the road is one of the most stunning and photo-worthy beaches in SoCal, El Matador. The spectacular eroded cliffs, rock formations (which remind me of a beach on the southern coast of Portugal), and a massive natural arch are worth the climb down to the sand.
A scenic drive through Malibu will bring you to Santa Monica's historic pier. You will catch glimpses of it long before you reach it and can stop somewhere along the way for photos and viewing. If you've never been to the pier though, it is worth exploring by foot. Enjoy various snacks and foods, gift and souvenir shops, street performers, a vintage carousel, and a solar-powered Ferris wheel, among other fun rides.
Next, you are off to Beverly Hills to drive down what is probably the most famous shopping street in Los Angeles, Rodeo Drive, with its palm trees and high-end designer stores. If you're hungry, I recommend enjoying a meal at The Hideaway (you can even find free parking for an hour or two in several parking structures nearby.)
This next stop is really two iconic views in one! The Griffith Observatory itself is a famous sight and for good reason, but the incredible panoramic views of Los Angeles from the building are as much of a draw as this magnificent structure.
Did I say two views? There are actually three famous views here! Get a great view of the Hollywood sign from the property as well. Talk about a must-visit location!
Lastly, make your way downtown to take in views of LA's music and theater district and in particular, the incredible gleaming Walt Disney Concert Hall which has become a symbol of the city over the last almost 25 years. You can explore the public areas inside, and I highly recommend a walk through the rooftop Blue Ribbon Garden. You also can't go wrong with a delicious meal at Asterid. You may even want to grab tickets for a Concert Hall performance to end your trip with a musical bang!
