A weekend getaway in Northern California often means one thing: venturing to a smaller town. Going east on US HWY 50 you’ll find the towns of Placerville and Camino. Perhaps better known to locals as the location of Apple Hill. This area is filled with apple orchards and wineries. There are enough orchards and wineries that there will be something to do for everyone in your group. Yes, you’ll be able to eat many of the tasty apple treats, and you’ll be in for some surprises, too. There is always something new to see at Apple Hill!
Fall is the busiest season. Locals and city-dwellers drive to the area to enjoy fall activities, as well as see the picture-perfect foliage. One of the most popular activities is apple picking. Whether you’re with a group of friends, or a family with little ones, apple picking is something everyone will enjoy. Several orchards will let you pick apples. It’s best to get a map of Apple Hill at the first place you visit when you arrive in the area. In order to experience all Camino has to offer, you’ll want to stay the night. Weekdays are a great time to visit to avoid crowds. If you visit on the weekend, be prepared to wait for parking and wait in lines– we’ve done it before, and it’s still so worth it!
There are many places to stay in the Camino area, but this rustic cottage really stands out. It’s surrounded by trees that turn brilliant shades of rust, orange, and yellow in the fall.
Pack as many fall activities into your trip to Apple Hills as possible. You can pick apples, taste apple cider, wander through a pumpkin patch, and even wine taste. There are also many craft fairs and other activities that will keep the whole family entertained.

Before ending your day touring Apple Hill, buy a pie from High Hill Ranch (we love the Dutch Apple), and a bottle of wine from Lava Cap winery. Now you’ve got yourself a perfect evening at the cabin.
Twenty years ago, Apple Hill was a destination only known by locals in the Sierra Foothills.
Today, Apple Hill attracts droves of visitors each year, with the majority visiting in the fall months. If you want to do what the long-time Apple Hill guests do, eat your way through all the orchards. Then leave with a pie or two, a bag of apples, apple butter, and something hand crafted.
The farmers and vendors at Apple Hill are always coming up with new apple recipes.
Some of the most popular, long-standing apple treats you can expect to see and taste include: apple fritters, apple donuts, apple cider, apple butter, apple pie, and even apple ice cream. Several places serve meals, too. Bring a cooler if you want to buy frozen goods, such as pies and other treats.
Bring your camera when visiting Apple Hill since there are plenty of picturesque views of orchards tinged all shades of orange during the fall.
When you arrive in Apple Hill, whichever orchard you choose to visit first, be sure to ask for a map of Apple Hill. That way you’ll be able to experience the entire area– orchards, views, and everything else.
An outdoor deck and fire pit, complete with pillows and comfortable seating, makes this the perfect place to enjoy your apple treats and observe the fall foliage among the wonderfully-scented pine trees.
