Nevada City's Victorian neighborhoods are absolutely beautiful no matter what time of year it is. The historic structures radiate an old-fashioned charm that reminds us of simpler times. However, fall is arguably the best time to explore these neighborhoods and you can do just that with the Victorian California Fall Colors Tour.
The hours takes approximately one to two hours and is completely self-guided. You can do it whenever time suits you best. However, fall colors are expected to be at their peak from mid to late October. The tour makes a partial figure-eight through two of California's oldest districts which explode with stunning fall colors during this time.
The tour will lead you through Nevada City's narrow Victorian streets which are lined with gorgeous Maple, Ash, Birch, and other delightful deciduous trees. As you traverse the neighborhood's small hills, you'll feel as if you've been transported to an autumn scene from a New England-esque postcard or something!
A complete description of the tour can be found here and provides step-by-step directions to the best sights. Each "stop" along the tour features a specific tree that is physically numbered via painted markers on curbs and sidewalks. The tour is easy to navigate by yourself and the self-guided aspect allows you to complete it at your own pace.
The tour begins at the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce office as 132 Main Street. Here you'll find "tree marker #1" which features a classic maple tree, 40-feet tall and boasting brilliant red leaves.
All in all, the tour features 15 fantastic trees with individual descriptions. The tour is almost like a safari but instead of seeking out animals, you'll be seeking out magnificent and colorful trees. It's no wonder photographers flock to Nevada City every year to capture the brilliance of the fall season.
You'll end the fall foliage tour by returning to the commercial section of Nevada City's Historic Downtown. Every Northern Californian should explore this charming town during its most photogenic season. Grab your camera, lace up your walking shoes, and get going!
