Howland Hill Road is one of those Northern California bucket list items that everybody should experience at some point. You've likely already seen pictures of this breathtaking drive, but pictures just don't do it justice. You need to experience this drive for yourself!
The gravel road is well-maintained but driving on it can be a heart-pounding experience. After all, it's easy to feel small when hundreds of old-growth redwoods are looming over you.
However, this isn't just any redwood forest. This region of redwoods is considered one of the most beautiful forests that our country has to offer. And there's no better way to experience it than driving right through it!
The road is just 10 miles one way but takes around 45 minutes to an hour to traverse. You'll definitely want to take your time as you slowly cruise your vehicle on this narrow unpaved road.
The road's narrowness only enhances how close you feel to these magnificent redwoods. You could almost reach your hand out of the car window and touch them.
The road's history is almost as fascinating as its views. Howland Hill Road was originally constructed as a plank road between Crescent City and the Gasquet Toll Road during the mid-19th century.
Today, it's a popular attraction for both locals and travelers from all over the world.

There are plenty of attractions along this iconic road that are definitely worthy of a visit. Stout Grove is considered one of the most scenic stands of redwoods. This grove may not be the largest in height or acreage, but it's definitely photogenic.
To get to Howland Hill Road from Highway 101, turn right onto Elk Valley Road near the southern end of Crescent City. You'll find the road on your right.
After driving through the park you will end up at U.S. 199 near Hiouchi. Don't put this drive off any longer. This scenic adventure is a must!

Beyond the sweeping desert views and jaw-dropping sunsets, a few experiences from that trip stand out in my memory. One of my favorites was our hike to the famous Skull Rock in Joshua Tree National Park. Armed with my sister's National Parks Pass, we entered the park and meandered down winding two-lane roads, captivated by colossal rock formations that felt like ancient giants frozen in time. The trail to Skull Rock stretched just under two miles, leading us to the rock itself—a haunting, naturally sculpted “skull” formed over millennia by relentless wind and water erosion. The adventure was more than worth it. If you go, be sure to stick to the trail and carry plenty of water—the journey is as memorable as the destination.

Another unforgettable stop after our hike was - Mas o Menos, a tucked-away gem off 29 Palms Highway. This spot had everything you’d hope to find after a day of desert adventure: lightning-fast WiFi, expertly crafted coffee, and cocktails that hit the mark. I tried my first “Spaghett” here—a refreshing twist on the classic with Miller High Life and a splash of Aperol—and it was as delightful as I’d heard. At night, we went up into the mountains to Pioneertown and caught a show at Pappy and Harriet’s, a beloved roadhouse-style bar, restaurant, and music venue. Pappy & Harriet’s is a unique cultural gem blending desert charm with a vibrant nightlife scene.

All in all, this trip was one of my most cherished desert escapes. Perhaps it was the timing—a meteor shower we’d planned around to experience the sky at its most spectacular, with almost no light pollution and endless, unobstructed views. Or maybe it was the raw, unfiltered nature of the desert itself, a place that makes you deeply aware of your heartbeat and the rhythm of your breath.
