There are over 50 breathtaking state parks to explore in the Natural State, and of course, all are worth a visit. But chances are, you might have only explored the well-known ones. Parks like Petit Jean, Mount Magazine, and Devil’s Den are probably part of your yearly rotation. However, the smaller, little-known parks are great to get away from it all. They offer a chance to fully immerse yourself in nature without all the crowds. And that’s especially true for Lake Poinsett State Park in the tiny town of Harrisburg. It’s a lesser-known state park in Arkansas that is perfect for a peaceful getaway. This beautiful hidden gem is less traveled, and it offers enough recreation for a weekend or a day trip adventure.
With just over 2,000 residents, the sleepy town of Harrisburg is a great place to escape when seeking peace and quiet.
Situated inside Crowley’s Ridge, not many folks know that this tiny farming town is home to the beautiful Lake Poinsett State Park.
Built in 1963, Lake Poinsett State Park is a lesser-known gem that’s a perfect day trip destination or for a weekend adventure.
Tucked along the serene Lake Poinsett, a 432-acre man-made lake, there is plenty of great outdoor excursions that await.
Although no swimming is allowed at the lake, fishing is a popular activity at the park, where anglers can catch bass, bream, catfish, and more.
For additional water recreation, launch the boat or bring the kayak or canoe and spend the day floating the lake. The sunsets are especially beautiful, so be sure to catch a glimpse while on the water.
If you’re there for the day, pack a picnic and take advantage of the day use area. It includes picnic tables, a pavilion, an adorable playground as well as an open field for family games.
Camping is also offered at the park, and it features 29 campsites. The facilities include Class A, Class B, and tent sites, as well as a community fire pit.
If you would like to fully immerse yourself in nature, be sure to trek the hiking trails. They are easy hikes that are both kid and dog friendly. Other amenities include a visitor center, interpretive tours, workshops, and so much more.
This hidden gem is great for year-round adventure, but it’s especially gorgeous during the Fall months, when the changing leaves offer vibrant hues.
