Do you ever feel the need to just pick up and go? Some weekends, I feel spontaneous and take an unexpected road trip somewhere that's between 1-2 hours away from my house. Sometimes I'll even bring the kids with me. If you feel like heading to the town of Jerome one day, I have planned an unexpected Arizona road trip you can easily do in a day. Take a look:
This road trip is 119 miles and will take nearly 2.5 hours one way, making it 5 hours round-trip. You can use the Google Maps link to guide you along the route. And feel free to add any other stops you want to make along the way to Jerome!
Start your journey on I-17 in Phoenix and drive north.
1. Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum
Our first stop is at the Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum. Maybe you've seen the sign for it just as you're heading out of Phoenix on the I-17. Well, today it's time to stop and see what this museum is all about! You'll get a taste of what the 1800s Wild West was like through a series of exhibits in original and reconstructed buildings throughout the museum's property. It's a step back in time and a fascinating look into the past.
2. Arcosanti
One of the most interesting places I've stopped at off the I-17 is the experimental town of Arcosanti. It all began in 1970 when the Cosanti Foundation built Arcosanti out in the desert north of Phoenix. Its mission was for its residents to practice archology which combines architecture and design with ecology and leaving a limited footprint. Since it started, thousands of artists have come through Arcosanti for workshops. Visitors are allowed to explore the main building and the grounds and tours are offered as well. There's even a cafe and a gift shop filled with original artwork for sale. This is such a uniquely fascinating place to visit, and I highly recommend it!
Did you know you can spend the night at Arcosanti? Book your stay on the Arcosanti website.
3. Jerome
Your final stop on this road trip is the hilltop town of Jerome. You have arrived! Now it's time to explore all it has to offer including its shops, galleries, and restaurants. You can even take a Ghost Tour in town during your visit.
