Given our rich Native American and Hispanic heritage, quilts have been an integral part of many Arizonan's lives. They signify warmth, comfort, culture, and the love stitched right into them. This unique trail in the White Mountains features dozens of quilt square designs mounted on beautiful barns, and they're guaranteed to bring up heartwarming and nostalgic feelings.
In 2016, a few businesses decided to hang barn quilt squares on their buildings. Before long, the trend spread throughout town.
Quilting has helped shape the culture of this mountain community for over a decade, so it's only fitting for Arizona's first barn quilt trail to be located here.
Both downtown and the rural countryside are teeming with quilts. Make a treasure hunt out of it and see how many symbols you can identify!
Residents have been stitching away for the annual Alpine Quilt Show since 2003, so expect to see some extremely talented work.
Most of the barn quilt squares are made from wood that has been painted or fitted to resemble traditional quilt patterns. This is done to make sure they can weather the elements that would destroy a stitched fabric quilt.
Just like snowflakes, no two squares are alike. Many reflect personal interests of the home or business owner, and you might recognize a few!
