Nestled in the Black Mountains of Mohave County sits the town of Oatman, a unique place that seems frozen in time. Approximately 102 people live in this tiny area, but people come from all over the state to bask in its charm. Whether you're looking for a nostalgic day trip destination or weekend adventure, this friendly town in Arizona will put a smile on your face.
This sleepy town was once a bustling gold mining village.
In 1863, prospector Johnny Moss discovered gold in the Black Mountains. He opened two mines: one named Moss, after himself, and another named after a kidnapped woman, Olive Oatman.
Between 1900 and 1940, Oatman had over 10,000 residents!
Unfortunately, the gold mining efforts dwindled when the U.S. entered World War II. As a result, most of the population moved away, leaving a ghost town behind.
Nowadays, travelers can't resist Oatman's nostalgic charm.
