Alabama is filled with many hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. From waterfalls and caves, to bridges and canyons, the list is endless. While many of these hidden gems are located in Alabama's much larger cities, several others are tucked away in the state's more rural areas. Listed below, we've included a road trip route that'll take you to six hidden gems that can be found in rural Alabama. Be sure to stop and visit each one of them. You won't be disappointed!

1. DeSoto Falls - Mentone
Your road trip will begin at DeSoto Falls. DeSoto Falls is one of Alabama's tallest and most beautiful waterfalls. Located atop of Lookout Mountain near Mentone, it's a definite must-see.
2. Mary's Pit Bar-B-Que - Gurley
Following a short drive, you'll arrive at Mary's Pit Bar-B-Que for a tasty meal. Mary's Pit Bar-B-Que is situated off the beaten path in Gurley. Ever since 1958, this tiny restaurant has been serving some of Alabama's most delicious barbecue. And when it comes to dessert, you'll definitely want to save room for their famous banana pudding.
3. Dismals Canyon - Phil Campbell
Your next stop will be Dismals Canyon. Dismals Canyon is located in the small rural town of Phil Campbell. Tucked away in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, this sandstone gorge is home to rare insects called dismalites. These insects resemble glowworms and are definitely a sight to see when they come out at night.
4. Natural Bridge - Haleyville
Following a short drive, you'll arrive at Natural Bridge. Natural Bridge is the main feature of Natural Bridge Park in Haleyville. With a height of 60 feet and a length of 148 feet, it's also the longest natural bridge east of the Rocky Mountains. Interestingly, Natural Bridge is also believed to be more than 200 million years old.
5. Bird's Farm - Forkland
After a scenic drive, you'll arrive at Bird's Farm. Bird's Farm, which is located off the beaten path in the rural town of Forkland, is one of Alabama's most unique roadside attractions. It was created by Jim Bird in 1993 and showcases a variety of whimsical sculptures made from scrap metal, bales of hay, and more. People of all ages, especially kids, love Bird's Farm.
6. Cheaha Mountain - Delta
Your road trip will end at Cheaha Mountain. Cheaha Mountain, which is located just a few miles from the tiny town of Delta, is Alabama's highest natural point. Home to Cheaha State Park, Alabama's oldest state park, Cheaha Mountain also offers some of the state's most breathtaking views.
