Alabama is well known for its incredible outdoor adventures and activities. For example, anyone who visits our great state will have the opportunity to hike some of the nation's most scenic trails, stroll along our gorgeous Gulf Coast beaches, and explore some of the world's largest caves. These are just a few of the outdoor adventures and activities waiting for you in the Yellowhammer State. Experience some of these outdoor adventures and activities by setting off on this two-day getaway.
From national parks and campgrounds to waterfalls, canyons, and more, there is so much to love about America’s natural splendor — and June, designated as Great Outdoors Month, is the perfect time to get outside.
With less than two hours of drive time, this outdoor adventures road trip features a variety of outdoor attractions you're sure to enjoy.
Go Strolling Through Birmingham Botanical Gardens
We’re starting our adventure in Birmingham with a stroll through Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
Birmingham Botanical Gardens is one of Alabama's top outdoor attractions. It covers 67.5 acres and welcomes more than 350,000 visitors each year. It also offers free admission, so you don't have to worry about paying anything to experience these beautiful gardens.
Dine at The Garage
After your garden stroll, we’ll be getting lunch at The Garage, a popular dive bar in Birmingham.
The Garage is a unique restaurant and bar in Birmingham that was established in 2014. What makes it such a unique dining destination is its courtyard, which consists of concrete patio furniture, antiques, and an endless amount of metal junk pieces. People enjoy dining in this courtyard because it offers a one-of-a-kind atmosphere that you won't find anywhere else. When it comes to food, The Garage is well known for serving the most delicious sandwiches, which are always made fresh to order.
Explore Rickwood Caverns
Following lunch, we'll be taking a short drive to Warrior to explore Rickwood Caverns at Rickwood Caverns State Park.
Rickwood Caverns is the main attraction at Rickwood Caverns State Park in Warrior. This cave features several limestone formations that many experts believe are more than 260 million years old. What makes this cave such a unique one to explore is that you'll get to go 175 feet below the earth. Also, because such a large amount of shell fragments have been discovered inside of this cave over the years, many experts believe it was actually carved from an ocean bed.
Go Jet Skiing or Boating on Lewis Smith Lake
We'll then have hours of endless fun on beautiful Lewis Smith Lake, one of the nation's clearest lakes.
Lewis Smith Lake, which is most commonly known as Smith Lake, covers more than 21,000 acres and is located in three Alabama counties: Cullman County, Walker County, and Winston County. It's a popular lake for jet skiing, boating, and swimming. It's also one of the clearest lakes in America.
Stay the Night in a Lake House on Lewis Smith Lake
Our adventurous day will come to an end with an overnight stay in Heirloom Cabin, a brand new lake house in Crane Hill on Lewis Smith Lake.
Heirloom Cabin, which is nestled within trees and moss-covered rocks, is located one mile from Rock Creek Marina in Crane Hill. It's situated on the banks of Lewis Smith Lake and offers an incredible view. This charming cabin has four bedrooms and three full bathrooms, so it's the perfect place for an overnight stay with the entire family.
