Calling all stargazers and nature lovers! Brazos Bend State Park in Needville, Texas appeals to both camps, offering nearly 40 miles of trails that meander through lush wetlands and forests in addition to a world-class observatory. This underrated state park is perfect for a family adventure, so if you have yet to visit (or even if you've already been!), I highly suggest adding it to your bucket list.
If you love exploring the great outdoors and the wonders of outer space, Brazos Bend State Park is calling your name.
It's hard to believe this lush oasis is hiding just 45 miles outside of downtown Houston. It boasts a whopping 37 miles of trails for walking, hiking, biking, and horseback riding, and some of them are wheelchair-friendly.
The park has an all-terrain wheelchair available for use. Call (979) 553-5101 to reserve it prior to your visit.
Experience wetlands, hardwood forest, an accessible boardwalk and observation deck, picnic areas with shaded benches, and more.
You'll also have the opportunity to see lots of wildlife, including more alligators than just about anywhere else in Texas.
Be sure to read about alligator safety before visiting the park - but remember, they're likely more afraid of you than you are of them.
Other park activities include fishing, camping, and a nature center with various exhibits.
One of the most unique aspects of Brazos Bend State Park is that it has an on-site observatory.
Operated by the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the George Observatory is open Saturday nights year-round (and weather permitting).
Visitors can marvel at the night sky via telescopes, live camera feeds, and constellation laser tours, leaving with a whole new appreciation for the vast universe that surrounds us.
Amateur astronomers help guide you on your journey, showcasing the stars and planets in the most brilliant light possible to give your experience even more meaning.
Observatory tickets must be purchased online in advance. Visit the Houston Museum of Natural Science website for more information and/or to reserve your spot.
Visit the Texas Parks & Wildlife website for more information about Brazos Bend State Park, including current hours of operation and entrance fees. You can also visit Tentrr if you're interested in camping in the park.
