One Of The Most Remote Swimming Holes In Texas Is A Must-Visit This Summer

If you think you’ve discovered all the hidden swimming holes in Texas, I’m willing to bet you don’t know about Boykin Springs Lake in Zavalla. This secluded oasis is nestled in one of our state’s four lush national forests, and it’s an idyllic spot to take a dip on a hot summer day. Complete with campgrounds, a waterfall, and the Sawmill Hiking Trail, which leads to the ruins of a turn-of-the-century sawmill, Boykin Springs will quickly become one of your new favorite summer destinations.
Nestled within the dense and rugged Angelina National Forest in deep East Texas lies Boykin Springs Recreation Area. Locals have been coming here to camp, hike, fish, and swim for decades, but the area is still largely unknown across much of the state.
Boykin Springs Lake is one of the main attractions in the recreation area. Boasting a sandy beach and cool, spring-fed waters, this refreshing oasis is perfect for a summer dip.
I live just a few hours from Boykin Springs, so I've been swimming here for as long as I can remember, and it never gets old. Every year, I eagerly anticipate immersing myself in the refreshing lake waters, knowing I'll feel brand new by the end of my trip.
Since the lake is tucked away so deep inside of a forest, it feels very remote and secluded. Combine that with the minimal crowds and virtually no noise pollution, and you have your own little slice of paradise.
Visitors also love to walk along the creek that feeds into the lake. There are several other swimming spots to splash around in on the trail, as well as a small (yet undeniably beautiful) waterfall that cascades down over a series of rocks.
Once you've had your fill of water time, the Sawmill Hiking Trail is a can't-miss attraction while you're here. It leads to the ruins of an old sawmill, and the whole experience is equal parts eerie and thrilling.
You are also welcome to camp out overnight if one day just isn't enough time. There are 14 locations for tents or RVs (up to 24 feet long), plus three tent-only sites and a historic CCC picnic shelter that accommodates 74 people.
