Now, that same set is sitting abandoned and decaying in the heart of Texas. After filming wrapped up on the movie, the set was turned into a roadside attraction called Alamo Village.
The Story of This Abandoned Place in Premont, Texas Is Truly Fascinating
Abandoned places in Texas aren't hard to find, and you don't even necessarily have to look that hard. Premont Primary School is one of them, and it's been succumbing to the elements for decades.
Abandoned places in Texas aren't hard to find, and you don't even necessarily have to look that hard. In fact, I've seen plenty without ever intentionally seeking out a single one! Our state is huge and full of history, brimming with ghost towns and old buildings whose rotting walls sag under the weight of secrets from the past. Such is the case with the Premont Primary School in the Rio Grande Valley town of Premont, Texas. The school has been abandoned for decades yet miraculously remains standing, and it has become a popular destination amongst urban explorers. Unfortunately, the school suffered a fire several years ago, so it's even more of a shell of its former self, adding even more tragedy to an already harrowing story.
With a population of under 2,500, Premont is little more than a blip on the map - but it was everything to the students of Premont Primary School. The school, which is located off Highway 281, was constructed way back in 1947 and operated until the early 1970s. At that point, the building was determined to be contaminated with asbestos, but officials decided to build a new school instead of tearing it down because of the high cost of asbestos abatement.
For nearly 50 years, the once state-of-the-art school sat abandoned, and eventually, the elements began to take their toll on its facade. Walkways became wildly overgrown with weeds, dust settled on the desks that were once filled with eager-to-learn students, and even the boards covering the windows and doors started to warp.
What's particularly sad to me is how beautiful certain parts of the school used to be - especially the auditorium. I went to an elementary school that was also built in the early to mid-1900s, and the auditorium was always my favorite place because it had a certain old-fashioned elegance about it that newer schools just can't compare to. Premont Primary's auditorium brings back all sorts of memories for me (I couldn't find any copyright-free photos of it or else I would've included them!), and I only wish it could've been preserved somehow.
Unfortunately, a fire ripped through the school in December 2021, furthering its demise. Now it's little more than a pile of ruins that will soon return to the dust from which they came.
Please note that exploring abandoned places in person is usually dangerous (especially in this case since asbestos has been confirmed in the building) and often illegal, so I wouldn't recommend trying to find the school.
