There are lots of small towns in Texas that are worthy of a trip, but in my opinion, few stack up to Schulenburg. Located about 1.5 hours southeast of Austin, this rural, agricultural town is home to fresh pecans, historic churches, and a rich Czech and German heritage that imparts a distinct, Old World charm. Most people just pass through the town without stopping because it's located near the convergence of three major highways, but I'm about to show you why this little blip on the map is definitely worth a spot on your Texas travel bucket list.
Welcome to Schulenburg!
The motto in this tiny Texas town is "Halfway to Everywhere," which perfectly illustrates just how remote it is.
Schulenburg was settled by Czech and German immigrants in the 1800s, and that rich, cultural heritage is still very much alive in and around the town.
Local bakeries sell authentic kolaches...
...and the Texas Polka Music Museum honors the legacy of polka music in the Lone Star State. You may even catch some live music on the front steps if you're lucky!
The town square is charming as can be, and the locals are known for greeting new people with smiling faces.
As far as activities go, people travel to the area from all over the world to see the famous "Painted Churches," which are located in the surrounding communities of Dubina, High Hill, Praha, and Ammannsville.

You also can't leave Schulenburg without visiting Potter Country Store.
This longstanding local institution offers the best, freshest pecans you've ever tasted, available in a variety of mouthwatering flavors.
The pecans are grown at the store's family-owned orchards right here in Schulenburg, so you know you're getting the best of the best. In addition to pecans, the store sells coffee, pies and other baked goods, canned items such as preserves, and more.
