Chili is the official dish of Texas, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a place that serves a more authentic bowl than Tolbert's. You won't find any beans in the chili at this local institution - one of many reasons why Tolbert chili is the best chili in Texas.

Located on South Main Street in the heart of downtown Grapevine, Tolbert's is, quite possibly, the best place to grab a bowl of authentic Texas Red Chili. Frank X. Tolbert, the founder of the world-famous Terlingua Championship Chili Cook-Off, opened the restaurant in 1967, with his very own chili recipe front and center on the menu.
Once inside the restaurant, you'll immediately be taken by the rustic atmosphere. It's classic Americana with a distinct Southwestern flair, and old photographs that illustrate the rich history of its signature dish cover the walls.
Tolbert's is quite a lively place, especially at night. Live bands perform almost every evening, performing a variety of genres.
When it comes to the food, you can't eat at Tolbert's without ordering a famous "Bowl of Red." While the exact recipe is a family secret, Texas Red Chili is usually quite simple, containing only meat, onions and garlic, tomatoes, and spices.
The chili is available in three sizes: cup, bowl, and "Super Bowl." You can also order it extra spicy if you like your chili with a lot of kick!
Onions, cheese, and a whole jalapeno pepper are the standard toppings, but you can opt for Fritos instead. Other chili options are available, as well, including vegetarian, pork and green chile, and a "North of the Border" bowl with beans.
