We've mentioned Hamilton Pool, Jacob's Well, and tons of other hidden gems countless times, but this one just might be the most secluded of all. Hidden deep in the Angelina National Forest, Blue Hole looks like a tropical paradise with its glistening turquoise waters. East Texans who are used to murky creeks and lakes can't believe a treasure like this exists in the area, making it a great destination for a day of summer fun. The water has been rumored to heal skin irritations, acne, and minor cuts and scrapes, making it seem like a fountain of youth in Texas. Although the validity of that is undetermined, one thing's for sure - you'll feel like a new person after a day of relaxation and rejuvenation at Blue Hole.
Not to be confused with the Blue Hole in Wimberley, this 12-acre lake sharing the same name resides out in Jasper County in a privately owned section of the Angelina National Forest.
The history behind this pristine little lake may surprise you. In 1893, it was known as Kyle’s Quarry, a sandstone quarry that supplied the stone to build the Sabine Pass Jetties Extension, Galveston sea wall, and many other structures around Texas.
In 1920, miners attempting to dislodge more sandstone were using dynamite when a misfired blast broke through a geyser, revealing an underground spring. The spring flooded the quarry, turning it into the shimmering sapphire lake we know today.
Although the lake sits on private property, nature lovers can still get the chance to visit this beautiful oasis and swim in the cool, calming waters. The owners of the property welcome visitors, you’ll just need to call to schedule a visit ahead of time. Just be sure to call ahead, as trespassers will get ticketed.
